Shadow in the Attic.

“This is what makes an excellent horror!”

During the first night at their new home, a young couple find themselves exploring strange sounds coming from the attic. Events escalate as they discover something sinister already living there.

Director Matt Jeston sets out to make a classic horror inspired short which takes on all the familiar traits of a film from the genre. It’s simple in its direction which is clearly by design and makes for a nail biting film which audiences will enjoy (and be terrified by). Its story is relevant to anyone that’s wondered what might be up in their attic. Jeston gets straight to it and builds the tension by having the characters hear noises coming from upstairs. There is a real sense that something awful is coming and you’re anticipating it at every moment. This is what makes an excellent horror!

The use of the cat in the film is an excellent choice whilst our main characters are totally unaware of what lurks in the shadows. The cat provides a warning for them which they naturally don’t notice. It makes the film all the more chilling the more you watch.

The use of lighting is done to great effect and not only suits the genre but the title itself. Each scene is lit expertly and with great precision which helps to create a dark and terrifying atmosphere, giving the audience more reason to keep their hands ready to cover their eyes.

Taylah Clements and Dylan Stumer feel like a real couple on-screen and have good chemistry. They work really well as the unsuspecting couple that we’ve seen in many other horrors. Both of their performances help to make this a more memorable to enjoyable watch.

Director of Photography Kevin Nguyen captures the film with a distinct and creative style which looks cinematic. Considering the small budget, the production quality was incredibly high and doesn’t feel rushed.

If you’re looking for a stylistic and classic horror inspired film, then this is one for you!
