Osiris

“Nominated Best Thriller”

★★★★

Reeves has created a superb film that takes on a unique yet challenging concept…

When a girls intense nightmares leak into her waking life she struggles to recognise what is real.

Director Elliott Reeves compelling thriller Osiris shows immense promise in this filmmaker and explores a dramatic story that will keep you invested throughout. The concept alone is something that deserves recognition as jumping between time frames is not something easily pulled off. But in this case, it works seamlessly and really ramps up the tension building throughout the film.

The story is an interesting one and something that Reeves adapts somewhat from Egyptian mythology and the God of Osiris. But the concept of quantum immortality is what makes this film really stand out as it allows the audience to pay close attention to the time jumps to try and work out the story puzzle for themselves. This approach makes for a challenging edit but it works effortlessly without feeling jarring in the slightest.

Lead actress Meg Clarke takes on the role of Nova with total authenticity and focus, understanding the story structure clearly. The supporting cast of Di Smith, Will Usic and Ryan Hodson create a realistic family dynamic for Clarke to work off. All of the cast work incredibly well in the film and stand out in their own right with their powerful performances.

The cinematography by Sam Powyer is truly deserving of being seen on the big screen. Powyer makes full use of the locations and keeps the framing exciting. The lighting is moody and adds to the subtle look of the film by utilising many practicals where possible. One aspect we noticed was the score, or lack there of. It’s used very minimally and doesn’t overwhelm the film, instead only picking up towards the end and adding more suspense in doing so.

Reeves has created a superb film that takes on a unique yet challenging concept, and delivers it with outstanding results. Osiris is one that you’ll want to watch back a few times to try and piece it together, discovering new details each time. It’s certainly worth the time…
