ALONG CAME RUBY

“Nominated Best Sci-Fi”

★★★★

A film that’s well worth a watch for both Sci-Fi fans and casual fans alike.

In a post-apocalyptic world, Ruby, a determined young woman, embarks on a treacherous journey west in search of her older brother Henry. Along the way, she encounters an enigmatic old woman who holds secrets of the past.

Post apocalyptic Sci-Fi films are challenging stories to pull off but director Riccardo Suriano does just that, with the superb Along Came Ruby. The opening scene in particular works incredibly well at bringing the audience up to speed quickly and setting them in the world that Suriano has created. Allowing you to simply experience the film and invest in the story. It’s a well made film with a lot going for it!

Alexandra Boulas who plays our hero Ruby is a powerhouse of an actress, handling the complex nature of the story with total clarity and understanding. Considering that a lot of the film involved Ruby travelling on her own, Boulas kept the character interesting enough that you rooted for. Their is an ernest and innocent aspect of her character whilst coming across like a grizzled veteran. Liz Kastner as the old mystery woman was really well cast and creates some great moments opposite Boulas.

Suriano made a great choice to bring on Director of Photography Joe Katches as this film deserved a talented eye behind the lens to properly capture the story. Katches really makes use of the exterior locations to establish the film and world it’s set in. The colour grade from Walter Volpatto is esepcially outstanding and of the highest quality, giving the film a very high production look.

The score from Andrew Conn is fitting and adds a sense of gravitas to the story which was needed. It’s not overstated and really expands on the finale of the film to give it more purpose and significance.

The story itself has a lot of original ideas in a genre that has been explored many times before. It’s something that deserves a second watch to dwell on the ending. Suriano and the team have managed to create a film that’s well worth a watch for both Sci-Fi fans and casual fans alike…
